A Piece of Michelangelo in Bedford Stuyvesant

Black Madonna of Our Lady Of Victory - Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn       Pieta - Michelangelo

Last weekend, during an open studio event, the Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church opened its doors allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of one the church’s most prized possessions.

A bronze cast of the head of Michelangelo’s Pieta [done with permission of the Vatican Treasury], the only of its kind to be finished with black patina was donated to “Our Lady of Victory” in 2004.

See New York Times article or New York One for more information.

  1. I WAS PRIVELEDGED TO VIEW THE REAL PIETA WHICH WAS BROUGHT TO NEW YORK FOR THE WORLDS FAIR…..IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SMOOTH MASTERPIECE I HAVE EVER SEEN AND BELIEVE I EVER WILL SEE. IT’S WHOLENESS WAS COMPLETE AND UNDENIABLE. THEIR ONENESS WAS APTLY PORTRAYED…

  2. that’s amazing – I didn’t even know that it travelled – now it’s sealed behind glass in St. Peter’s

  3. I saw it too at the New York World’s Fair, and still remember the profound impression it made on me!
